Generous Gift funds our Volcanology Cluster

We are excited to announce that Gwendolyn and Charles Lillis — University of Oregon advocates, volunteers and benefactors — have committed $10 million to endow two new faculty positions in the Department of Earth Sciences. Combined with the recent hiring of volcanologist Thomas Giachetti, the new hires will establish a volcanology cluster of excellence as part of the university’s drive to increase its number of tenured research faculty. This enormously generous gift provides us with an amazing opportunity to elevate the UO’s research capabilities in volcanology and volcanic hazards. One of the new positions will be in remote sensing & volcano geodesy, and the other will be in computational modeling of explosive eruption processes.
